Compression socks help with poor circulation in the lower extremities of diabetics and athletes.  It is said that compression socks aid in performance for athletes. Wearing compression socks helps both diabetics and athletes to increase the blood flow in the feet and lower legs. This tends to give athletes an upper edge in performance.

The reason for wearing these kinds of socks is actually very easy to understand. They are simply designed to increase the flow of blood in the feet and lower legs. They can also be referred to as support stockings or support hose. They typically apply progressive pressure to the lower leg and foot area.

Throughout the day, your body is pulsing blood through your veins constantly to all of the extremities. The body is intended to flow as evenly as possible. However, gravity can sometimes make blood to puddle in the lower extremities which will produce all types of problems with circulation.

While blood pooling doesn’t always create these conditions, it also causes leg cramps or needless fatigue. Some people will elevate their legs at the end of the day. But, as soon as they move around again they continue to have the same problem leg issues.

An elastic band is on the top that is stronger than regular socks so it induces pressure on the legs. The blood that is circulating is being forced through more narrow stations because they are compressing the surface of the arteries, muscles, and veins. Arterial pressure is then improved which allows the blood to reoccur in the heart and it keeps the blood from pooling in the feet. Generally, compression socks are tighter around the ankles and grow looser as they get to the knee area.

If you have to go on a long trip, compression socks can be a very important item to wear. They help prevent blood clots. A blood clot can be life-threatening. Deep vein thrombosis can be protected against by wearing these socks. Also if you wear them while traveling they can prevent leg cramps and edema.
